Learn to Play D&D

Ever wonder, “What the heck IS D&D?” Curious but unsure how to get started? If you have always been eager to get your Elf toes wet, role-play a character, roll some 20-sided dice and tell a fantasy story together—while gorging on Doritos and Mountain Dew— my “Learn to Play D&D” sessions are for you!
I offer introductory D&D sessions for adults and teens called
“I’ve Always Wanted to Play Dungeons & Dragons.” I also offer a “D&D for Team-Building” program for workplace settings. Details below.

I’ve Always Wanted to Play Dungeons & Dragons:
A Three-Hour Fantasy Role-Playing Game Experien

Practice your spell casting and dice rolling skills, sharpen your swords and your minds, and strap on your adventuring boots — we’re going to learn how to play Dungeons & Dragons. In this one-off session for beginners, Ethan will introduce the fundamentals of the venerable table top role-playing game D&D, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

Players will learn about characters and how to role-play them, and how to work together as a team to respond to the challenges devised by the Dungeon Master. Will you complete your quest? How will it turn out? The only way to know is to try out D&D for yourself and help tell the story together. Come with an open mind and expect to journey through a fantasy realm full of elves, dwarves, magic, goblins, dragons and dungeons (of course) and other dangers. Everything you need to play — polyhedral dice, character sheets, miniature figurines, Doritos and Mountain Dew — will be provided (but feel free to bring other provisions for your adventure).

NOTE: We will be using a customized, streamlined version of D&D to focus on basics and having fun, rather than getting bogged down in rules. The session is not intended for experienced players, who may find the rules too simple.
For adults (18+) only, not for teens or children. $35 per person, or for $200 reserve the whole session for your group (up to 6 players)

“D&D for Team-Building”

This 2- or 3-hour Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) team-building session for a workplace setting offers a unique and engaging way to foster teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving. Playing D&D can enhance:

Collaboration, Communication and Teamwork: In D&D, success often hinges on players working together to overcome obstacles, whether it’s battling monsters or solving complex puzzles. Players must rely on each other’s strengths, just as colleagues must in the workplace. Players need to discuss strategies, share resources, and decide as a group how to move forward. This mirrors real-life workplace scenarios where open communication leads to better outcomes

Creative Problem-Solving, Critical Thinking and Decision Making and Strategic Thinking : D&D presents challenges that require creative solutions. Whether it’s navigating a trap-laden dungeon or negotiating with a monster or character, players must think outside the box to achieve their goals. This kind of creative problem-solving is a vital skill in professional environments. The game requires making decisions under pressure, which encourages employees to sharpen their decision-making skills, weigh risks, and work through uncertainty in a safe, imaginative environment. Players must plan ahead, manage limited resources, and make tactical decisions—all of which help develop strategic thinking, a crucial skill for future leaders.

Strengthened Team Dynamics: In D&D, each player assumes a different character with unique abilities (a warrior, healer, rogue, etc.), teaching players to understand and appreciate diverse skill sets. Similarly, in the workplace, employees learn to recognize the value of different roles and work styles within their teams.

Empathy and Support: Players often role-play characters with different backgrounds and experiences, fostering empathy and understanding. This can help break down workplace barriers and create a more inclusive environment where colleagues support one another.

Boosted Morale and Engagement: D&D sessions offer a fun, exciting break from routine work, allowing employees to relax and bond over shared adventures. Fun team-building activities can reinvigorate morale and help reduce workplace stress, making employees more engaged and productive in the long run.

Shared Experience: A D&D game creates shared memories and inside jokes, building stronger relationships between team members. These positive interactions often translate to improved cooperation and camaraderie back in the office.

Improved Conflict Resolution, Handling Disagreements, and Compromise and Negotiation: Just as in the workplace, disagreements are bound to occur during a D&D game. However, the collaborative nature of the game requires players to resolve conflicts in order to progress, helping employees develop conflict resolution skills in a low-stakes, enjoyable environment.

Encouraging Inclusivity and Confidence: In D&D, everyone has a Role. D&D is an inclusive game where every participant contributes to the group’s success. This encourages quieter team members to speak up and take on active roles, helping to build confidence in their ideas and abilities. Since D&D is highly flexible, players can approach challenges in many ways—combat, diplomacy, or stealth—showing that diverse methods can lead to success, just like in a workplace with varied skill sets.
