Private workshops and classes with Ethan Gilsdorf:
Get Sh*t Done (GSD) accountability writing group! Mondays noon to 1pm ET, September 30 to December 9. Remote via Zoom. $85 for a 10 week session. Register here.
Make a commitment to your writing this fall. At Get Sh*t Done (GSD), you’ll find a community of writers, you’ll dedicate weekly time to your writing and you’ll get to work. We meet via Zoom weekly to connect, offer support, and write together. Each one-hour GSD session includes: Introductions and an optional writing prompt (10 minutes); quiet writing time (40 min); and a wrap up/debrief/open Q&A with Ethan and your peers about the writing life (10 min). No sharing or workshopping, just some old fashioned accountability and a weekly date with yourself and your work (no matter the genre), in the company of like-minded writers. Attend a couple sessions or — ideally, hopefully —attend all of them. (Note: no meeting on Oct 14, Indigenous Peoples’/Columbus Day)

My students say:
“One of the kindest and most generous writing teachers on the planet.”
“This may be the best writing class I've ever taken."
"I'm grateful beyond measure for the care that Ethan has taken in teaching us."
"You're a great teacher, Ethan. I feel lucky to have been in some of your classes."
"You may be the hardest-working Grub instructor I have encountered."
"Had it not been for your class, I would not have had the courage to write an essay at all."
"Ethan is the best writing teacher I've encountered."
"Ethan is the bomb. ... wise, kind, thoughtful, and encouraging."
“You were not only the best writing professor … but also the only one that really taught me anything.”
“You are a fantastic teacher and provide a place where writers can feel free to take risks. Thank you.”
"The essay classes I took with you were so helpful. You’re a wonderful teacher, and you really opened up the possibilities of the form and what an essay could look like. Thank you for the creative freedom that gave me as a writer."—Teri Stein, published in The Sun
"Being in community with others, especially other writers, around illness, pain, trauma, and healing allowed me to feel less alone in my own experiences. I also believe in and value deeply empathy, which I think a workshop like this very keenly fosters. Telling and receiving stories allows us to understand better those who live around us and reminds us that everyone carries a hardship."
"Thank you SO much for an awesome class, your fantastic feedback on my essays and for all of your help on my journey. It all started with your “So You Want to Be a Writer in 2013 and Beyond?” class years ago. It took over a decade—but it’s all happening. I’m so grateful for your expert instruction, thoughtful insights, generous encouragement, and kindness."—Dr. Mary Anderson, author of The Happy High Achiever: 8 Essentials To Overcome Anxiety, Manage Stress, And Energize Yourself For Success—Without Losing Your Edge
More kindly things his former students have said about him:
"His enthusiasm for the craft is contagious, his experience is impressive, and his teaching style is highly engaging."
"One of, if not the best teacher I've ever had in my life. ... I would probably rearrange my entire schedule so I could be in his class again."
"Ethan Gilsdorf is the real deal: a great writer and also a great instructor, two skill sets that sometimes do not overlap. He's smart and organized, and has extraordinary classroom management skills."
"I got more out of your 6 week class than I did out of some of my semester long MFA classes."
"I'm grateful beyond measure for the care that Ethan has taken in teaching us … This was my first experience with both giving and receiving critiques and it was a wholly positive one. … So thank you to everyone in this class--and to Ethan--for establishing a tone that was constructive, upbeat and respectful."
"Nurturing and challenging ... You are masterful at creating an atmosphere for both. I loved the class, and I can’t wait for the next one!"
"Ethan was awesome! Engaging, funny, and super knowledgable about the topic. He was a great instructor."
"Ethan is the bomb. ... wise, kind, thoughtful, and encouraging."
"Ethan was fantastic --- so encouraging and helpful!"
"Ethan was totally excellent. I was inspired by what he taught us about writing, and feel my own growth in understanding the genre has been huge."
"I was in a writing slump but I feel today [Ethan's class] brought me out of my writingless lows. Have lots of ideas and a quick resuscitation!"
"Ethan is awesome: made us feel at ease, covered the important content, made the class interactive and fun. Sharing his experience and the reality of writing was eye-opening in a good way."
"Ethan is an excellent teacher and I appreciated hearing his perspective and experiences. He had a great way of letting the class flow, while still sticking to the time frame. It was just great!"
"The instructor is funny, thoughtful, and smart --- would definitely recommend!"
"I loved having Ethan as a teacher. I think my writing has made some major advancements because of his guidance."
"I will suggest Ethan to anyone interested in Non-fiction. He is a fabulous professor, very knowledgeable, and always willing to help. He's also just a really wonderful person."
"Ethan devoted a lot of time to his students, and knowing my strengths and weaknesses with writing (and seeing them from the beginning of my battle with nonfiction), he was able to help me improve."
"I am profoundly appreciative of the time and thought Ethan gave to my writing ... Reading his edits and speaking with him had the wonderful effect of inspiring me to write *more*..." -- Nancy U.
"I was so impressed with how engaging he was both as a writer and an instructor. He kept the class moving at a good pace, and he made it fun, even the scary workshopping, which can be so harsh. I felt like he set strong guidelines for workshopping which kept it from feeling personal, and he really stuck to the positive criticism and what would help and improve our writing. He was also very good at drawing out people like myself who don't speak as much, and got everyone involved. I loved the projects, and I am sad the class ended. I look forward to taking more classes with Ethan, as it makes me want to write."-- Karen L.
"Ethan Gilsdorf has an ability to make even dry facts entertaining. I found his seminar to be well-structured, informative and interesting, his teaching style honest and straightforward. His myriad experiences, handouts, and anecdotes made for a rewarding introduction to the field." -- Jessica Lee
"Ethan was always prepared and offered wonderful feedback. He really cares about his students developing throughout the semester and pushes us to try new things in our writing."
"Workshopping is very effective. And not only did we workshop, but Ethan provided us with outside reading and sometimes writing exercises within class. Early on, Ethan gave us an example of the type of letter he wanted us to write each classmate when critiquing their pieces. It was the most in-depth letter I'd ever been expected to write in a workshopping class. Even though it took longer to construct, I feel that this longer letter method was very helpful."
"Ethan's feedback was always constructive and straight forward. He respected us and never sugarcoated anything. I also appreciated that he put a lot of effort into showing us different writing styles and authors to aid us in our mission to find our "voice.""
"He was very engaging, and it often felt like we were a friendly group rather than a class."
"Ethan's practical teaching style made Arts and Culture Writing seem very accessible. In addition to talking about his own experience, he had us brainstorm story ideas from a press release to illustrate many of his points. He covered a wide range of material that was useful for both new and seasoned freelancers, and the packet of resources and story examples he provided will be invaluable." -- Julia Maranan
"I want to commend you on your seminar last night. For me, as an outsider to the writing community it was a revelation and also an eye-opener! ... You made everything clear and I was impressed by the usefulness of what you told us ..."-- Gerald Zeitlin
"A firehose of knowledge on the craft and business of feature writing."
"Ethan was a great instructor. He gave practical, constructive feedback from the perspective of a writer who know what editors look for, and took the time to give us meaningful feedback. ... This workshop gave me a very necessary kick in the ass to get my writing into high gear."
"[Ethan] had great energy and humor to sustain interest through the course of a big data dump. [He's] strong at bouncing off questions and ideas from the class. ... Thanks for a very useful class."
"Ethan did a terrific job with last night's seminar. He has a dry sense of humor and was human and versatile... both of which kept his multitudes of information engaging."
"The handout was terrific, a handbook, actually. He was very available in one to one and in group, generous about follow up if we wanted it. I [recommend] keeping him on your teaching staff."
"GREAT introductory course! ... Ethan's knowledge of the field is thorough..."
"Ethan's enthusiam for his subject is evident ... "
"Ethan has a nice blend of humor, genuine style and general experience.”
